Steering Wheel Grinding

Charlie,

Re: In & Out play on steering wheel & Grinding

I went through same thing, it was something simple, I'm thinking, I'm
thinking....

Pretty sure it was just a matter of re-adjusting the cluster:

(you might want to remove the steering wheel to inspect and refresh your
memory of where the cluster clamp screw is and how to access it from
underneath with the steering wheel in place - then replace the steering wheel
and procede as follows)

1) Leave the steering wheel on
2) Loosen the cluster clamp screw through the acces port on underside of the
steering column housing (it is slightly to the right of center, tip of
phillips s.d. pointed to Left)
3) Slide the cluster away from the dash 'til it's snug against the steering
wheel
4) Tighten the cluster clamp screw - BUT NOT TOO TIGHT
5) Vertig! (German - I hope - for "done")

#3 takes care of your telescoping effect
#4 avoidance of having clamp too tight avoids pinching the column, causing
stiffness and grinding.

The grinding could also come from the need of some lubrication at various
points along the column that you can get at with the steeing wheel off, and
the cluster off/out -

There is a bushing about 2"-4" down inside (I vaguely recall) that could use
some grease and the electrical contact ring between the steering wheel horn
and the cluster could use some electrical contact grease.

Try the above first though which can be quickly accomplished with a screw
driver (phillips).

Good Luck
