I have used ATF (auto trans fluid) with good results on several 
occasions.  Here's what I did:

drain old oil, keep the filter on
fill with Xquarts of ATF
let engine *IDLE* for about 10 minutes--DO NOT REV IT UP!!!!
drain and remove/replace filter
fill with cheapie oil ($.79 quart), put on "no-name" filter $3.00
let engine run for a while, you can rev it a little if you want
drain cheap oil, remove cheap filter
refill with "good" filter and Mobil 1

It worked for me on the Audi and the (ugh!) girlfriend's Tempo.YMMV
