I've replaced just the bearings in several alternators. Typically
it's no big deal, though you might need a puller or two. Works
well, although if brushes can be found easily, might make sense
to do them as well, since you're in there anyway.

Whatever you do, fix it before it seizes. The alt on my old Fiat
locked up tight once. (at night, of course). What an incredible
howl from the belt, followed shortly by blackness and quiet...
