Hi Peter,
You may be talking about quattro system prior to '88.  My 
understanding is that since '88 the new TORSEN system is a full time 
AWD system.  The rear differential is only lockable for upto 25mph.  
Once that speed is reached, the differential lock is automatically 
disengaged.  Therefore, practically in all driving conditions 
(except when taking off), the TORSEN, or quattro system is fully 
engaged, and the differential is disengaged.
