quattro - concept

Can someone clarify this for me.  For the new (1990 90q) quattro with the 
TORSEN system, does it mean the torque balancing is only between the 
front the rear axles ?  Does the TORSEN system also distribute (control) 
power between left and right wheels ?
In other words, is it a front and rear control, or is it truly a AWD - 
ie: all 4 wheels benefit from the quattro system ?

When I lock the rear differential, am I locking the front to the rear so 
that front and rear turn the same ?  Do the left and right of either 
front and rear still turns independently ?
