Au Contraire!!! Maybe all turbo's have the shield, but not all 5000's do! My
'84 has zero shield, you take the oil filler cap off & you're starin' at the
camshaft lobes!

... thanks Mike, if I would have thought about my own '83 I would have
realized that too. I know that at some point all VWs and Audis had such
a cover installed ... I bought one for my '78 Fox. I don't think it
matters whether or not the car is turbocharged. It sounds like the
cam cover started somewhere around '85 or '86.
I guess the correct statement would be ... If you can't see your cam when
the filler cap is removed then there is little risk with leaving the cap
off for the purposes of a test.
