I would strongly recommend using a ZIF socket or regular socket if you intend to
swap EPROM's any more times. The more times you de-solder the IC the more chance
of either destroying the chip (the heat is transmitted up the leadframe through
the bond wires and onto the die) or damaging the solder pads on the board.
Also I'm sure you will be taking pre-cautions but make sure you are grounded to
the same potential as the ground plane on the board, ESD damage happens when you
least expect it, Murphy's first law.
