That is right... there is nothing to protect it, but it has never been an
issue with mine. At 300,000 miles, nothing went wrong with the exposed
parts. I replaced the belts routinely etc... anyway.

Check lower control arm bushings... common affliction with this car. They
run about $9 each (two required per corner) and probably 1/2 hour work
per side to replace (if all goes well) The nut on top should be tight!
Hold the strut shaft with the allan wrench, and tighten outside nut.
Should tighten down nicely.
Also: check strut bearings...

Its fine... its lifters and its the audi trademark. :) In winter its a
little worse, but goes away.

Check for bent control arm/or tie rod. If not, bring it in for a 4 wheel
alignment ($89 here at the dealer) Well worth it. If ambitious you can do
it yourself.
