Gas pedal for cold starting ??

Mark, I bought the Audi 80. It has the 108HP
2.0 liter engine. 

I found it very surprising that the owners
manual explicitly says that the accelerator
pedal should be depressed slightly while 
starting - for a fuel injected car !!!!

I also discovered that here in New England
with temperatures well below freezing the 
car does not start if the accelerator is not 
depressed. My 1990 Audi 100 will start 
without the gas pedal though.

Is this normal for the 2.0 liter engine ?
