eliot--don't take this to mean i want to start another engineering purpose
thread (really--i don't) but just 'cause they stiffened up the body doesn't
mean it's got to get heavier--compare a few other cars out there from one
generation to another (i'm thinking of the MB E-series and a few others)
Different sizes and shapes can easily change stiffness of a structure--for
example, on the '88 80/90, the trunk opening was much smaller than on the
'87 and earlier cars--i'd guess that was a significant source of
improvement. OTOH, if greg is only looking for order of magnitude, we're
close enough!
greg--the easiest way to find "a" weight of the car is to look at the safety
compliance sticker on the door jamb--the one with the vin and date of
manufacture. also on the sticker is the gvwr (gross vehicle weight rating),
which includes full fuel, oil & coolant. now subtract out maximum
load--look on the tire inflation sticker for this figure. the accurate way
to find "the" weight of your car is a scale--check truck stops in the
industrial area of town.
