HELP! STRANGE SHORT!!
Hey,
I have an late '85 4kqs and there is a very strange problem. There is a
clicking sound (like a relay which has shorted out sounds like) UNDER the dash
in somewhere around behind that little pocket beside the streering wheel. The
symptoms are as follows:
when engine is cold there is no click and no radiator fan
when engine temp reaches first tick past red, the clicking
starts
the fan goes off and on with the clicking
also, all lighting (driving lights, headlights, etc) dim
noticably
Now, what I have done to fix this problem is as follows:
bought a NEW rad. fan relay that goes under the hood in the
fuse/relay box
disconnected the fan wires (aka, no fan at all, but it is now
the deep dark winter here in ME. so fan wouldn't come on anyway, trust me)
When the new relay was installed and the wires hooked back up again, same
problems. Okay, $22.50 was shot. Of course electronics are returnable so if
anyone wants a relay, you can have it for $15. The Hayes manual says the only
switch in the whole cooling system is on the bottom of the rad. I would think
that all that controls is the fan through the relay. However, the relay is
never metioned in the Hayes. Not even in the schematics of wiring. Is it just
me, or is this the Audi gods cursing me for putting in too big of a radio?
(see Mega- Stereos thread)
I have the tools, the time, and the desire to fix this problem before the warm
weather comes. My car has enough stress trying to stay cool WITH the fan
running all the time in the summer. I even flushed the rad but it still
struggles to stay below 'H' when idling.
Any and all suggestions will be so greatly app.
