Re: a4 1.8 turbo 20V coming to US
I'd have to say that Ned and whomever are incorrect in saying that the small
turbo on the
1.8 L 5-valve Turbo engine strangles output above the nominal power Audi
claims
(150hp). In fact, Audi has a version with the same turbo that they quote at
210 hp.
Further substantiation comes from Issue #25 - 1995 of "auto, motor und sport"
from
Germany. On pages 124-131 the tuning efforts of four noted German outfits are
reported
(Abt, MTM, Nothelle, and Oettinger - all well known names). Because they have
to be
certified and approved for street ust by the Techinsche Ueberwachungs Verein
(TUV),
their claims are usually quite reliable.
Bottom line?
Every company got 200 or more horsepower and only Oettinger changed the turbo
for a
larger unit. All other tuning was of the chip persuasion plus larger
intercoolers and higher
flow exhausts in most cases. Here are the results in short form:
Abt MTM Nothelle
Oettinger (Stock)
