The chip is soldered to the board, so they remove the chip and insert
a socket instead. Unless you know what you're doing I wouldn't try that
myself...

In addition if the car is older than model '94 you need to replace the boost
sensor to a one with a wider range.

I've haven't dealt with Ned but this is my experience from doing similar things
to my previous car ('94 S4), at a local tuner here in Sweden.
