Intermittent dash lights -help-

Hi,
    I have an '86 5kcstq that the dash lights won't work in unless the lights
have been turned on before the key is turned on. The temperature readout
on the climate control also goes out when this happens.   What the ????? 
Is there an electronic relay that controls the dash lights? Any suggestions 
would be appreciated.
