 I had a similar problem a few years ago, including the temp readout. I'll
tell you what fixed it-don't know if its a quirk in my car only, or
purposeful German engineering.

Turn your ext. lights on and take a walk around your car. Replacing a burned
out license plate bulb cured my problem. I'm curious to know what you find.
