side marker lights

Just saw a nice clean gray 200TQW in Framingham (MA) today that had
something interesting...side marker lights about 4 inches above the Audi
symbol on the front fender. These little side markers look suspiciously
like those on Saabs, used to signal turns. 
 
Anyone know how (if) side marker lamps are fitted in Europe? Do they
replace the Audi emblem on the body belt? I know that my 200 sure doesn't
have any mounting holes where these lights were... 
 
On my other car, a badge hid the hole where these lamps mount (before I
pulled them off and put in the side markers)...that's why I suspect that
the Audi emblem may do the same... 
 
Or was I just seeing things ;-)
