You also want to check the last two exhaust manifold's studs on both ends 
of the exhaust manifold. It's very common for early models 5 cylinders to 
have broken exhaust studs since the OEM studs were too soft to start with.
I used to own an 85' 5000s which has 4 broken studs, 2 on each end and they
make a ticking noise particularly loud when the engine is cold, exhaust gas
escaping from the gap at the 2 ends of the manifold. As it heated up it 
expanded and eventually seal better and noise become lower. I eventually 
have my mechanic replaced all of them. It's not an easy job, the dealer 
wanted $500 for the job, I got it done at an independent shop for around 
$300. They drilled out the 4 broken ones resurfaced the manifold. What a 
big difference after they fixed it.
