Re: Wierdness from the front end
You may also want to check the two liquid engine mount. I used to have an
85' 5000s which has shown some of the similar behavior you mentioned in
your mail. It turned out to be left side liquid fill engine mount. It
burst open. I noticed a funny clunk when I hit a little bump on the driver
side. I thought it was the upper strut bearing but it wasn't. It also
turn wide on that side too.
But I won't rule out loose subframe bolt. Did the alignment shop mention
anything about change or correcting your caster when they did the alignment.
I know the caster is set by the factory and you are not supposed to be able
to change it but you can actually do some slight adjustment by loosening
the subframe and move the subframe fore or aft to make some adjustment to
the caster. A loose suframe will definitely make your car turn funny as
well as an off-centered steering wheel. I think the subframe bolt on the
5000s like my 85' I used to have needed to be torqued to 81 ft/lbs. I think
the bolts are reusable, the one on my 92' 100 V6 is not reusable they are
the torque yielding type i.e. they stretch, you need to replace them
everytime you loosen them, and they are torqued to 48 ft/lbs plus a 1/4 turn
which turn out to be over 100 ft/lbs. One thing I always check after an
alignment are the bolts on the top camber plates and the 2 nuts on the tie
rods that locks the adjuster, make sure they are tight.
