Bob,
Mine doesn't do anything like that. I wonder if it could be a sticking
valve which is hanging up a bit, then banging down on the cam lobe or the
seat on the return stroke. Such a thing might stop when the engine warms
up and the tolerances loosen. Sounds like something that could cause
damage if left. Has he or the mechanic tried a stethoscope to track the
noise.

Bob, I'm only going to guess once: cracked exhaust manifold. You'll get a
"ticka ticka ticka" noise that sounds like lifter noise. Just about every
