auto tranny

We are having a miserable experience with Audi's automatic
tranny. We have a beautiful 1985 5000CS which is now awaiting
its THIRD automatic tranny. We are its second owners. Bought
it absolutely pristine looking, just needed as has every Audi
we have purchased,

on the original transmission which we were unaware of. We, at
first, marked it up to the over 100M miles on it. A later visit to
the dealer (150 miles away) revealed the existence of the Bulletin -
they were sympathetic, replaced the fluid in the diff, and sent us
on our way. Two years later and perhaps 2,000 miles, it's broken
again.

We had loaned it to our son in Boston, he had to towed to an Amaco
place who pronounced it dead and asked for $2M for a rebuild. Told
our son to bring 'er home.

Have any of you in the NE got a good tranny to sell? Also what is the
experience of the list with these trannys? Should we just give up?
The only good thing that came out of this is that the first breakdown
led us to purchase an 87 Quattro that has been an absolute joy.

The list should know that a friend of ours who purchased an 85 Quattro
abandoned in a junk yard here in Northern NY for $500 which needed
nothing more than some new hoses, astounded the area PU crowd the
other night. Snowing, blowing, slippery. PU slides across the road
and is teetering on the edge of a steep embankment. Little 85
Quattro's owner obligingly stops, had a tow chain in the trunk, and
pulled that PU without hesitation or any spinning of wheels off the
embankment. There was a small crowd gathered and a lot of "Well I'll
be damned" and "What kind of a car did you say that was?" Our friend
was pretty amazed himself at the ease in which this was accomplished.
Just another good Quattro story.
