European car magazine did an article in January 1990 or so (they were
VW & Porche then) about repacking new bearings. If you get FAG
bearings you can remove the rubber seal, flush out the old grease and
repack them prior to installation. Some company that they mention
sells new seals. Note that you can only remove the seal, you cannot
disassemble the bearing assembly without destroying it. Considering
that these bearings last a long time under normal use (>60K, 120K
miles seems exceptional) this seems like a lot of work for not much
gain. Timken bearings have a metal seal and cannot be repacked with
different grease. I always liked the Timken bearings better. Some
trivia, FAG bearings use ball bearings, Timken's use roller bearings.

The bearings should not make any noise ever. If they do, they are
bad. They can be loose without making noise either. Time to replace
them in either case.
