Those problems usually make the turbos spin down pretty quickly, cuz the
engine basically stalles.....
 What would be the failure mode of an

Sure, or bearing failure, causing the impellors to hit the housings, then see
your above....

No need for a pop off valve in an audi....  I have one of the most radical
k26 based systems available and have run in excess of 22psi, no schrapnel
yet....
