At risk of extending this thread any longer, I seem to be reading some
rather extreme views on both sides of this one. While I have finally
learned to refrain from some of the more extreme gestures when I am
tailgated, I still often tap the brakes.

If I am in the fast lane and the other lane is open, I deserve to be
tailgated and I get over. I do getted ticked, however, when I'm in the
fast lane passing a string of slower cars, and some dingbat crawls up my
bumper presumably expecting me to cut off some slower car so that he/she
can pass. Some of these people are crazy and don't deserve to have a
driver's license. Unfortunately, crazy isn't just a form of speech here,
and you take a real chance playing games.

BTW, if someone had a real emergency I would expect the driver to stay off
my bumper while flashing the lights and hitting the horn. I'd say
legitimate emergency cases must account for at least 0.05% of the
tailgating that I have experienced.
