Re: PDQs lights, Bad Toyotas

I attached a .tif pic of the rally car and the 5ktq frontends to 2 separate
posts last nite... I'm sure, given the size (or maybe coimbra edit, who
knows), that it will take a while to get to the net..... If any of you would
like to see it sooner, I have copies I can send direct...... Just let me
know..... In the meantime, it should go to the net sometime in the next

A VERY interesting article and a very ingenious way to cheat, and some othere
exist on it too...... The article I read about it said that toyota is out
for 96 cuz of it..... Very sad

And would only do it when the whole unit was installed, as soon as you went
to "inspect" it by removing the clamp, the sucker would snap back into
place..... A very astute tech noticed that the barrel of the restrictor was
pretty big compared to the other teams, and started the investigation.....

Someone at the shop had a pretty cool CAD/CAM head to figgr that one out.....

Well, in my opinion, and this topic is addressed by most race teams
(including my ex-racing days), you made that point very clear from the
get-go..... Was winnning the priority, at all costs, or was the rule NO
CHEATING period..... I have a hard time thinking that Mr. Kankunan had no
knowlege of this, he has too much experience not to question where his crew
"found" another 40-50hp in a very restrictive racing class..... I just don't
believe that for a second...... he knew that he had the max HP before the
mod, is he to just ignore the fact that the car now just flies (esp when you
figgr a normal street driver can ""feel" a 10-12 hp gain)? Hmmmmmm......
And, when you look at the cheating involved, it WAS the 95 season, and was
THE advantage, so the 96 season should not be there for them to compete.....
Cheating is a bitch when you get caught.... And the point of Sanction may
seem tough, but the judges are right in that this was an INTENTIONAL DESIGN
to CHEAT specifically, not an accidental slip over spec or misinterpretation
of the rules.... They came down hard, as they should have......... I do
think your point is dead nuts on, Dr. K did not need this mod to win, so the
why question comes to mind......

If you're going to cheat tho, that was a killer idea..... More credit really
should go to the tech who caught it (it took at least a season after all)
