5000 brake grind... and Greetings!
Hi Audi Fans...
I've been on the list for a month, following the great conversations.
Finally decided to jump into the fray :) First, a little background...
Audis have been in the family since 1980 when we got the '73 Fox (with 74k
miles), which turned-out to be a faithful traveling companion on our
numerous trips to the Midwest (family reunions in Hannibal, Missouri,
mostly) and California. It was retired in 1989 with 195k miles on the odo
(had over-size tires, so that would put the real figure well over 200k)
and replaced with a '77 Fox that we purchased with burned valves for $600.
The '77 received a 1.8l donated from an '87 VW Fox. It performed nicely
(by my standards ;-), but developed some niggling problems (including two
smoked auto trannys, albeit used -- not new or rebuilt) and never got very
good mpg's (22 to 25 city). After putting over 60k on in five years, the
folks decided to take my suggestion and get a 5ks.
Found an '86 on the opposite side of town (40 miles!)... one owner, 108k
well-maintained miles, beautifully shiny champagne/gold paint, 5 spd,
$3500 (Sept. '94). Folks fell in love with it... currently has 128k.
My first and only car is my '79 Fox, purchased for $500 in 1987 with
approx. 84k miles (had a bad speedo cable). It needed some help at first
(losta work ;^), but since then it's hardly ever let me down. I've done
99% of the work it's needed myself, never had to spend much $$ on it at all.
Starts right up morning after morning... has 143k now. Averages around 31
mpg city :) Since I am still a _poor_ student, I can only dream about
quattros, but my time will come :) Besides, I hate the thought of
giving-up on my Fox...
Well, hope I didn't bore anyone too badly :-} So, my first question: on
the folks 5ks, I've occasionally noticed a strong grinding when applying
the brakes at low speed (parking lots). It has four-wheel disks with pads
that love to squeal loudly (probably a hard composition). When it was in
for it's 120k service at Vincent Engineering (Phoenix, AZ), the brakes
were checked and no problem was found. I trust Vincent's, but what would
cause such a feeling? Brakes feel great otherwise. Anybody experience
this? Any ideas? Should I be concerned?
Very impressed with the list... hope I can contribute as well :)
TIA
Karl
