North/south actually, or fore/aft relative to the car.  The 9004s are 
perpendicular to the centre of the car.

I have only done one so far, but it seems to hav a better beam pattern.  
It's easier to remove the headlight and file out the two offending tabs 
in the housing, rather than the bulbs themselves.  You also have to swap 
a couple wires to get the right beams.

Look very carefully.  Two of the three slots are in different places.
