Hmmm, on an '84 4000? Must've been a factory one-off...
You didn't mention if the "spring" noise was coming from the fornt or the
rear of the vehicle, but if it's the front and your brake fluid isn't low
it's possible that the spring in the brake booster came unseated from the
back of the master cylinder. That would produce a noise every time you
depressed the pedal. Have a significant other listen at the booster while
you're on the pedal.
