87 5000 CS TQW Temperature Gauge Question

Hello,

I have an '87 5000CS TQW and the temp gauge on the dash operates only 
intermittently. The fellow I recently bought it from told me he had 
recently replaced it but it still is intermittent. If it stops 
functioning completely, unplugging it at the engine and then replugging 
it seems to do it. I'm not sure if it's in the temp sensor at the engine 
or in the plug. I am also told that the temp sensors have a reputation 
for occasionally being intermittent.

Any thoughts?
