Radio code doesn't work

     The Audi gods extracted a small token when I recently swapped out the 
     battery in the 91 200 TQW, locking up the original equip. radio. 
     
     Bought this car second hand--have the radio documentation--tried 
     entering the code given in the radio docs, "0144" according to 
     instructions. Doesn't accept it.
     
     One item that is troubling. Documentation reads that "The first digit 
     can either be a '1' or be blank" which is indeed the two choices you 
     get when entering the first digit using the preset station keys.
     
     So how do I explain a four-digit code of "0144" where the first digit 
     is "0"? 
     
     Anyone had a similar problem?
