Subject: EC article & ad for Eurospec stroker kit

Many of you saw the article in this months EC on the QC w a 95.5mm stroker
kit from Eurospec. They also have an ad in the same issue offering the kit
for ~$2000. My first thought was tooo much $$$.

FYI this crank IS from the VW Eurovan. Crank journals and bearings are the
same as those on the 2.22 and 2.3 5's. This crank is designed to use rifle
drilled rods; hence, the rod bearings have a different part # than those on
the 2.22. The 2.3 may already use the rifle rod, anyone know for sure? If
so, no need to buy rods.

Last year you could buy the EV crank from VW for $750. Called local VW
dealer today and quote is $898 for crank, $227 main bearings and $78 rod
bearings. My thinking, is: If you can find a friendly dealer, you may be
able to put this kit together for a more reasonable price than Eurospec's.
BTW, don't even think about using the EV's rods - they are 159mm in length
and designed for a block that is about 5/8" taller. Stay with your 144mm
rods and use pistons designed for VW's with the 94.5mm stroke (tectonics,
Ron's Parts etc.). These will sit 0.5mm higher in the bore; and yield a CR
of about 10.7:1. Be sure to double check deck height and valve clearence.

A 2.3 10v with improved exhaust (go for 2.5"), Schrick 272 should get you
around 180 HP. Do the head and manifold work and blueprinting thing and you
may just see 200HP NA. That last 20 hp is the expensive part.
