Life expectance of alternator belt

Greetings,

I have had my 89 200tq for one year and 3 months and have traveled 
somewhere between 20-23k in that time.  The current alternator belt is 
the second during this time, and its got enough  cracks in it that I 
plan on replacing it very soon.  Does going through two belts in 
basically one year and 20K tell me about the quality of the dealer 
supplied belts, or something else?

I can say that I had the belt tightened over the summer, since it was 
making noises, so maybe it was too tight which caused the current belt 
to be in the condition it currently is in.  Is this just one of the 
realities of maintaining a car, excuse me, an Audi!  This belt has 
lasted much longer in my previous cars.
