1992 Audi 100S - System Check Display

The system check display works only intermittently on my 1992 100 and
the manual says to visit the dealer if "OK" does not flash on.
I've noticed that it's more likely to work on very cold mornings.  Other
times, the system cycles through the temperature and oil displays and then
quits.  My questions are the following:

        How easy would it be to fix this problem?
        Is this something to be concerned about?  In particular,
        will the low fuel light (or another warning) still work
        or is that disabled as well?
