Re: 1992 Audi 100S - System Check Display

Scott,

Fifteen minutes may be a bit of an exaggeration, but the job doesn't take
long. Figuring out how to do the job is what takes the time.

I'm talking about your basic instrument cluster, incl. speedometer and tach.

The trim piece below the cluster is held on with three phillips screws
reached from underneath. Remove these scrws and pull off the trim piece.
This exposes three more screws visible from the driver's seat. Remove these
screws. Also remove the two screws holding the steering column trim pieces
together. Remove the top piece. It pulls toward you when you are in the
driver's seat.

The IC now slides toward the driver. It can be wiggled from behind the
wheel. Removing the wheel can also be of help making the job easier. Take
care. Don't destroy the wood trim pieces. There are several electrical
connectors connecting the IC to the wiring harnesses. Take not where each
comes from. Mechanical catches need to be opened before these connectors
come off. The IC van now be removed from the dash. Elapsed time about 4-5
minutes. (An electric screwdriver helps. :-) )

Take the IC indoord to a clean table and remove several hex/phillips head
screws. Examine what you are doing here some need to come out others tay
in. The object is to allow the opening of the hinged back of the IC.
Opening this back also disconnects two multipin connectors. These are the
ones needing cleaning. A rubber pencil eraser does the trick. Close the
hinged back. (Caution - make sure the electrical connections are right.)
Screw the hex head screws back in. Elapsed time for this part - another 5
or so minutes. Put the IC back in the car reversing the removal process.
Another 5 minutes.

Total elapsed time 15 (or so) minutes. It'll take you longer the first time.

Have fun.
