Information is always worth whatever it cost to get it.
Especially when the time come to exploit it.

I've always done all maintenance/repairs on my cars,
trucks, house etc. Many times it would have been
MUCH (cough) cheaper to just pay someone to do it,
but the knowledge/experience gained is worth much
more to me. I've had to search out, and in some cases
I had to buy special tools for specific procedures,
where if I just dropped it off at the dealer would have
been cheaper. BUT, now I know most the foreign mechanics
on a personal level, tackle any job (just about) without
fear, because I know who to look for when things go really,
     really wrong......

... A single fact can ruin a good argument.
