But the rings DO symbolize the union of the 4 companies. The Auto Union,
as it was known as, was the conglomerate of Horch, Audi, Wanderer and DKW.
The four marques retained their identities within the conglomerate, but
they all wear the 4-ring logo after the merger, which occured in 1932
(as an aftermath of the stock market crash of 1929). The history of
the Auto Union, its member companies, and NSU are well documented in
various publications (including the book "Audi Quattro: the development
and competition history" by Jeremy Walton).
