The 4 intertwined rings does symbolize the union -- which took place in 
1932 during Europe's depression days, as these 4 comparies were 
struggling to make it finiancially.

On the other hand, a 40s *German* auto would be rare indeed -- in the 
midst of WWII and all (unless its model year is in the very beginning of 
40s or at the very end of 40s).
