To get from Binghampton to Burlington you could try driving up through
Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. Lots of great roads and scenery there. Then
from Lake Placid take Route 73 to I87. Go under I87 and take the road off
to the left which is signposted to Witherbee and Moriah. This is a GREAT
piece of nicely surfaced twisty road about 10 miles long. This piece of road
and its continuation will eventually bring you down to Port Henry on the
west shore of Lake Champlain. It's mostly downhill heading East, so you
may want to turn round at the bottom of the nice twisty bit and try it
uphill as well:-)
Note - the twisty piece of road which I mention above is NOT shown on any
map of NY State roads I have yet seen. But it's there!
To then get to Burlington from Port Henry head South along the lake on 9N
and you can:
1. take Route 125 over the bridge to Middlebury, over Middlebury Gap to
Route 100, then up to Burlington. Traffic in Middlebury can be a bit of
a pain.
2. go a bit further South and take Route 73 to Ticonderoga where there is
a short ferry ride across (you can buy a "Fort Ti ferry" T-shirt). Then
continue on Route 73 over Brandon Gap to Route 100, then up to Burlington.
