Re: Always replace?

Just a thought..... Is it always necessary to replace the bolts
that the Bentley says always replace? I don't see any reason why
you would need to unless it was obviouslly bad? Any thoughts?

Some bolts, yes. For example, flywheel bolts are generally "best replaced"
and they take a brutal beating and distortion being torqued down.

Ditto some of the head bolts; Audi is prone to using $pecial bolts that
torque-stretch inelastically (i.e., are truly designed as use once/throw
away).

Obviously, many of the bolts can be reused, and will continue to work.
For awhile anyways. I'm prone to replacing even those bolts that "don't
have to be" replaced on the theory that gawd knows how some previous
gorilla has mega-torqued them, and it's a lot cheaper now to put in
known good bolts for a few dollars more. Mostly, I *hope* to replace the
nuts, and leave the studs alone . . .

Do you feel lucky today?
