ABS contoller interchangability...

My mechanic is having a tough time diagnosing an ABS problem on my 87 5kcsTQ,
after replacing rear pads and a caliper. He's waiting for a friend  to
"borrow" some kind of diagnostic device from the dealership he works at. 

If I should need to replace the ABS computer, does anyone know
interchangability with other years/models? I'll be boneyard shopping.
