First off, the demise of R-12 is greatly exaggerated. R-134a is showing its
own kinds of difficulties also. There's no guarantee it won't be as
expensive as R-12 in a few years. It does NOT cool as well as R-12 - close
to 20% less efficient. I talked to I.C.E. today. Their custom mount and
Sanden rotary compressor unit, which includes pump end fittings for the new
hoses you would need, is $495.00. Complete 134a switch is 'around' $900.00.
Lets say you bought the pump, and had two custom hoses made at 70.00 each.
Add 60.00 for evac and charge, and your're up to $695.00. Thats min $200.00
left over from a complete 134a switch, which gets you 6+ years money to
check/charge your system before you would break even - assuming no further
maint on the 134a system during that time (fat chance!). I would stick with
R-12 and go to the new pump.
