Peter,
  Sure sounds like brushes to me.  Around 100k miles is where I have had to
replace brushes in failed alternators.  I would find your parts source,(they
should be able to rebuild your alternator if needed also) then pull out the
alternator and check the brushes. They should extend  far enough to be
pushed back into the holders when the module in installed in the alternator.
If you know how to use a soldering iron, the brushes alone can be replaced
for about $6.00.
