front shocks - recommendations?

As I'm feeling every pebble I drive over all of a sudden, I'm afraid my 
front shocks have disappeared.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to replacements that would give me 
better than original equipment performance?  '86 5000 CDTurbo IL5
