I thought the same thing except that when I put the car on a hoist and ran it
in 5th gear at about 55mph, the noise was clearly coming from the middle of
the front part of my propeller shaft (in my case carbon fiber). Took it off
and took off the boot on the front CV joint. The boot was fine, no cracks,
holes or other breaks but the CV joint was dry as a bone and showed signs of
water having gotten in. The CV joint was shot and had to be replaced.

Put the car up and run it, I find that with no load or weight on the wheels,
if there is something loose under the car, this will make it seem very much
worse. It seems to make anything suceptible to rattling rattle like crazy.
