'88 90 2.2E Intermittent Starting Fault

Dear All

A friend of mine has recently bought a 1988 Audi 90 2.2E with 112,000 miles
on the clock. On occasions he is having problems starting it. The problem
seems to occur when the engine has not been used for about an hour and a
half but NOT when the engine is cold.

The engine turns over and usually fires first time but then dies almost
instantly, the car will not then start for about an hour.

He has taken it to a local garage on two occasions but they have not been
able to accurately diagnose the problem, on the first occassion they
replaced the distributor cap and rotor arm, and the second time they
replaced all of the HT leads, both times the problem re-occurred shortly
afterwards.

Any help or guidance would me much appreciated as his wife is due to give
birth in 3 weeks and he is a little worried that his car will let him down
at the wrong time.

Many Thanks
