It is 22mm.  

On the '88 90Q, an open/box wrench works fine.  You can 
remove the wiring harness from the connector on top of the engine, 
and feed it back over the transmission.  There are two clips that can 
be removed and replaced by hand (the are tough though), or use a pair 
of pliers.  Tighten the new sensor *before* you route the wire.  The 
wire will twist up if you route it first.
