A4 20V Tuner Car in SCI

I picked up the June/July issue of Sports Car International. First let me
say that, in general, this is a pretty junky magazine. But, they do have an
article on a German-tuned 1.8T. The company that did the tuning is
Motoren-Technik-Mayer in Wettstetten (fax number +841 99230).

They are extracting 286 HP (@5800 RPM) and 228 pounds of tourque (@2480
rpm)! The amazing thing is they are doing it with what they define as
"bolt-on" mods. They do not change the boost from the standard 1.0 bar, but
they do change:

- new exhaust manifold (with four pipes to the turbo and one to the wastegate)
- larger KKK K24 turbo (from the A2)
- HKS Wastegate
- Piper stainless steel exhaust
- "less restrictive airbox"
- larger intercooler
- bigger Bosch fuel injectors w/four nozzles
- ECU modifications

They also change springs, add Koni shocks and add 17x8.5 rims with
245/40ZR17 tires. They add a hideous (IMO) interior.

The result, they say, is a very smooth power band, without a turbo rush.
MTM offers a four stage solution: 185 HP, 210 HP, 286 HP (tested) and a 300
HP, which they believe to be the upper limit of a DURABLE A4 road car.
