I wrote the original post and have not yet found a reasonable explanation.
I tried the same "test" to no avail.  The other night, I threw a bag into
the car through the sunroof and the alarm didn't go off.  I've yet to go
back to the Audi dealer because I don't want to drive their junky rental car
for a day if I don't have to...
