Info: 30-valve engine / A4 Avant / A8 intro
Automobile (June 1996) reports:
"Audi of America wants the Avant for the U.S. market; the car is not likely
to arrive before early 1997, at which time it should be packing the new
five-valve, 193-bhp, 2.8-liter V-6, which steps in for the current 172-bhp
V-6 at the end of 1996."
AutoWeek (June 3, 1996) reports:
"As Audi prepares to launch the A3 in Europe, it also is ready - finally - to
bring its A8 flagship to the United States, with an on-sale date of Oct, 15.
Two A8 choices will be available: a 3.7-liter V8-powered, front-wheel-drive
model and a 4.2-liter V8-powered all-wheel driver."
"Both use a five-speed automatic; Audi won't offer its Tiptronic automanual
transmission here becasue that setup would have been more difficult to
certify."
"Pricing will be announced in September, but look for the 3.7 A8 to start at
around $60,000, and the 4.2 at around $65,000."
