Clunk!

Just got my '90 200 back after some automatic tranny work (all done
under warranty - I found the only independent tranny shop in the
US with a one-year warranty on their work!) and it has a clunk noise.

Here's the description: the car won't do it on the lift - it has to be
moving. The clunk occurs most loudly when turning sharply from
left to right; it's quite audible at low speed. It is also sometimes
audible when first accelerating after shifting from reverse to low,
or over bumps.

The clunk seems to be right underfoot - I can put my hand on the side
of the tranny hump and I can feel it near my knee. It's not up front
or in the area of the steering rack.

I got under it and looked - nothing obvious is loose, no rubbing
marks, and no motor mount is obviously bad. My first thought was the
mounts on either side of the automatic tranny were letting the engine
torque over, but neither are visibly separated. The bolt with
cup-shaped retaining washer on the mount under the driver does
protrude far enough thru the mount that I can stick my finger between
the mount and the washter - but it seems to still be in one piece.

The problem obviously is related to the combination of being moving
and turning sharply - or at least, that makes it happen most
conspicuously. It seems like it almost has to be a mount, but I'm
hesitant to start changing them - and it was NOT a problem before the
tranny work was done. The tranny shop will check it next week.

I welcome suggestions on how to find the problem!!
