Audi Quattro saves another one!
Well, yesterday on my way into work, my Audi Quattro saved me from a
BAD situation and a BIG headache or worse. However, this was not from
a freak weather/road situation, or a bonehead doing something boneheaded
in front of me.
On the way in, I traverse a bunch of nice little back roads through the
hills. One in particular, near my house, is a good shortcut between two
state roads. It's not a good choice for trucks; too windy and hilly for
them. The trucks that take it are generally quite nice about letting you by.
Not this one.
It was a tow truck, the big kind that tow semi and other heavy trucks.
He could barely hang onto 15-20 MPH going up the hill. So, when I got
to the straight section, I went to pass like I often do. Most trucks
wave you by, and try to give you room. This guy, as soon as he saw me
move over to start the pass, floored it (as it were), swung wide, and
pushed my car off the road deliberately. All four wheels were on the
dirt berm, and I faced three choices: to the left a 20-foot drop,
to the right this truck, straight ahead a nice elm tree.
I managed to get on my brakes and keep control long enough to get
back on the road, behind the truck again. He spent the next mile
trying very hard to push me off the road, or into the back of his
truck. At the next intersection, I managed to pass him (I need a
turbo), and floored it to get away. Well, that 15 MPH was a ruse.
He was doing almost 70 when he caught up with me, and he spent the
next 3 miles trying to push me forward off the road. At the next
intersection (with stop sign facing onto crowded state highway),
he jumped out of his truck and tried to get into my car, probably
with something heavy in his hand. Central locking kept him out long
enough for AWD to get me across a dirt gully and out onto the road.
Next stop, police station to swear out a complaint.
Both car and driver are fine. Driver recovered with 25 ounces of
Carrabassett Pale Ale, car with 18 gallons of Exxon Super Premium.
Well, we can't find him; I didn't get a plate#, and the tow company
name doesn't show up in the phone book. So, if anyone in Southern NH
sees a tow truck from E. Loder & Sons towing, let me and/or the
Windham Police Dept. know.
